With Christmas and the new year fast approaching, if you were thinking how much physical exercise you should be doing to keep fit and healthy, this may help.

As a rule of thumb, if you aim for around 2.5 hours (150 minutes) of light to moderate aerobic activity per week. That could equate to just 21 minutes every day of the week on a treadmill, every day of the week or 50 minutes of activity three days a week on a rower or exercise bike.

To keep things fresh and interesting, you could mix and match the type of exercise equipment you use to keep up your motivation levels.

If you have over done it on your holidays, here are a few tips to get you back into shape without having to go to extreme ways to achieve your fitness goals.

Eat regular meals at the correct time – By eating breakfast after waking up, and again within 3-5 hours, Start your days with evenly spaced out meals which will help replace your blood sugar and your metabolism, starving yourself only causes your body to go into conservation mode, and hang onto excess body fat which is not the desired effect.

Remember to drink lots of water. Aim for about 8-10 cups a day, as this will help your metabolism and can help to curb your appetite. It also makes you feel better and less bloated.

Reduce the amount of carbohydrate, but don’t cut back completely – cutting back on carbohydrates can force your body to use protein for food instead of using it to build your fat burning muscles.

By regular exercise, and following a few simple tips, you should be back to normal in no time at all, ready for christmas!

MOVE MORE -10,000 Steps Per Day
We have all heard the 10,000 steps a day is good for you. Studies have shown that because we are moving less, we are getting heavier, which makes perfect sense doesn’t it?
Our bodies are made to move and be actives, but thanks to the television, work desks, cars, etc we are now all sitting down and not moving.
Most people in the UK only take 4,500 steps per day, which is well below the recommended 10,000 as recommended by the British Heart Foundation and other well known organisations..
Studies have shown than by walking just 60 mins per day, we can keep fit, lose weight without changing any of our day to day activities. An hour of power walking or fast walking can use up about 400 calories.
So, what are you waiting for? Jump on a treadmill, walk outside, ride a bike and help improve your fitness – you have nothing to lose!
If you include a slight hill walk, or a treadmill with an incline, you can increase your calorie burning, as can walking on soft surface such as grass and sand which is great when on the golf course or at the beach!

Keeping fit, healthy and active is great for your physical health and fitness, and studies have shown that it can also improve your mental well being.

Whilst we may think that our body and mind are separate, but the activities we do with our body during exercise can have a very important and powerful effect on our mental health and well being.

Essentially, having a positive mental well being means feeling good about yourself and the environment you live in and has a positive effect in helping you live the life in a way that suits you.

Studies have proven that there is a link between a healthy lifestyle, being physically active and a good mental well being.
